Sustainable Severn Forum 2015

The Sustainable Severn Forum 2015, 9 December 2015, Bristol.

This event brought together key stakeholders from industry, local and regional Government, environmental organisations and academics who have shared interests to promote renewable energy, support economic growth and to protect the unique environment of the Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary.

This Forum, hosted as part of this year’s Bristol Green Capital programme, was held at a time when world leaders were meeting in Paris to set in place a long term strategy to combat climate change, while meanwhile closer to home there has been a renewed interest in the development of large scale energy projects such as the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon and other potential schemes in both Wales and England.

Building on the previous Sustainable Severn conference held in 2013 which focused on understanding the level of opportunity for Energy, Economy and the Environment, the 2015 forum sought to inform decision makers and build a consensus about how best to harness the energy potential of the Bristol Channel/ Severn Estuary while at the same time ensuing societies benefit from economic growth and the natural environment is protected and enhanced. Specifically the forum looked at three key areas:

  • Establishing key principles which should underpin and guide the development of future energy infrastructure projects
  • Setting a strategy that will encourage and enable investment in the right energy projects for the region
  • Building a governance framework that will enable Welsh and English stakeholders to work together to ensure better outcomes
It is intended that the output from the forum will help inform key decision makers, including the Local Authority led Bristol Channel and Severn Energy Group, and provide input to the energy chapter of the overall strategy for the estuary which the Severn Estuary Partnership is developing.
